Governance

Malam Umar A. Namadi (APC) has served as Governor of Jigawa State since May 2023, having previously served as Deputy Governor from 2019 and Commissioner of Finance and Economic Planning from 2015-2019. His administration runs a '12-Point Greater Jigawa Agenda,' focused on agricultural mechanization and investment promotion.

History

Jigawa State was created on 27 August 1991 from the northeastern portion of the former Kano State, under the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida. It is organized around five historic emirates: Hadejia, Kazaure, Gumel, Ringim, and Dutse. Its official 2006 census population was 4,361,002; the state government's own 2023 estimate places the population closer to 7.7 million.
