Lagos State

Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (born 25 June 1965) has served as Governor of Lagos State since 2019, re-elected in 2023. A graduate of the University of Lagos, London Business School, Lagos Business School, and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, he held several Lagos State government roles before winning the governorship under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lagos State was created on 27 May 1967 from the Colony Province and the former Lagos Federal Territory. It served as both state and federal capital until 1976, when the state capital moved to Ikeja; the federal capital later moved to Abuja in 1991. Though the smallest state by land area, Lagos is Nigeria's commercial and financial nerve centre, generating an estimated quarter of the country's GDP. Its population is genuinely disputed: the official 2006 census recorded 9,113,605 residents, while the state government's own figures and later projections put the real number well above 20 million today.

Lagos blends beaches, colonial history, and a fast-growing contemporary art and nightlife scene.
