Ogun State

Prince Dapo Abiodun (APC) has served as the fifth Governor of Ogun State since 29 May 2019. A businessman before entering politics, his administration has emphasized industrialization, public-private partnerships, and infrastructure, including the new Gateway International Airport, which took its first commercial flight in October 2025.

Ogun State was created on 3 February 1976 from the former Western State under General Murtala Muhammed. Its capital, Abeokuta, was founded around 1830 by Sodeke, a hunter who led Egba refugees to settle beneath Olumo Rock, which sheltered the Egba people during 19th-century wars. Ogun State turned 50 in 2026. Its official 2006 census-era population is 3,728,098; more recent estimates put it closer to 6.4 million.

Anchored by Olumo Rock in Abeokuta and the globally recognised Ojude Oba Festival in Ijebu-Ode, one of Yorubaland's most celebrated cultural events.

Cassava, cocoa, kola nut, and rice are grown across the state, supporting rural livelihoods alongside its dense industrial base.
